Delia, the lake with an open beach and untested water: dead fish in early August

In early August, a fish die-off occurred in Ungheni's Lake Delia. On the shore of the same lake, the municipal beach has been open since 21 June, with lifeguards — even though the Public Health Centre says the area has no sanitary permit, that in 2026 not a single water sample was taken and that swimming ought to be banned. What the documents say, what the institutions say, and where you can still swim.

A 16-year-old from Ungheni district drowned in a forbidden spot, four days after the district ordered water patrols

The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations reports three drowning deaths in three days, two of them minors, all in unsupervised spots. The first case, on 26 June, is at Măcărești, in Ungheni district: a 16-year-old boy bathing with friends in a forbidden zone. The 2026 drowning toll has climbed to 31 people, 7 of them minors — up from 18 just ten days earlier. The tragedy came four days after the Ungheni Emergency Situations Commission ordered water patrols, but far from the municipality's two lifeguard-staffed beaches.

Yellow heat warning and up to 35 °C: in Ungheni, safe swimming means only the Prut and Delia, where there are lifeguards

The State Hydrometeorological Service has issued a yellow heat warning for 22 June, with highs of up to 35 °C, and IGSU comes with reminders on three fronts: water, fire and health. For people in Ungheni the stake is concrete — since the start of 2026, 18 people have drowned in Moldova, two of them children, and the town has only two swimming spots with lifeguards: the Prut beach and the one on Lake Delia.

Ungheni opens its Prut and Delia beaches on Sunday — with lifeguards, a rarity in a country where 18 people have drowned in 2026

Mayor Vitalie Vrabie has signed the order opening the 2026 summer season at the municipal beaches on the Prut River and Lake Delia from 21 June, with lifeguards on duty all summer. In a country where almost all drownings happen at unsupervised spots — 18 people have died that way since the start of 2026 — a beach with a lifeguard post is not a formality but a safety measure.
